Reducing vehicle miles traveled (VMT) may be beyond the capabilities of a fleet manager.  In large agencies there may be a staff person who works on a commute trip reduction (CTR) program.  This is likely to be the place that VMT reductions can be made.  That said, it is something to consider in relation to your green fleet plan. There may be opportunities for coordination between the green fleet plan and the agency’s CTR program.  For those who are interested, the Washington State Department of Transportation maintains a website on CTR.

Other actions that can result in reduced VMT are alternative modes of transportation  Segways, buses, carpools, bicycles and car sharing programs (Flexcar).  Telecommuting and flex-time schedules are other mechanisms that some agencies use to reduce VMT.  Beyond these options the simple technique of consolidating trips whenever possible, as opposed to taking many individual trips, will usually reduce VMT and save fuel.
