Retrofits help a fleet address harmful diesel emissions from vehicles and equipment without having to completely replace the item.  This is important because, even though new diesel fuel and engine standards went into effect in 2006 and 2007, diesel engines last a long time.  This also means the emissions continue to be an air pollution concern for a long time.  Pre-2007 engines could still be on the road for 10 to 15 years and last, literally, a million miles each.  Retrofitting both on-road and non-road heavy-duty diesel engines now means the region can have cleaner, healthier air for years until the engines are replaced with newer, cleaner engines.  The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency operates a program called Diesel Solutions to help fleets with retrofits. Please visit their website for full details on retrofits and access to technical and even funding assistance.
